For babies and toddlers, getting in the pool is about much more than splashing and having fun. Early, positive experiences in the water can help children begin developing water comfort, confidence, foundational swim skills, and an understanding of water safety from a young age.
That's why Atlanta Swim Academy hosts Little Swimmers' First Splash every quarter—a FREE event created especially for children ages 6 months to 3 years and their families.
We believe every family should have the opportunity to learn more about early water safety and experience what swim lessons can offer their little one. By offering First Splash quarterly, we're able to welcome new families throughout the year and give more children the chance to have a positive first experience in the water.
Why Start Swim Lessons So Young?Parents sometimes wonder, "Is my baby really old enough for swim lessons?"
While infants and toddlers aren't expected to swim independently right away, this is an important time for introducing them to the water in a safe, structured environment.
Early swim experiences can help little ones become familiar with sensations that may initially feel unfamiliar—being in the pool, getting their face wet, moving through the water, entering and exiting the pool, and participating in activities with an instructor.
With repetition and encouragement, the pool can become a place they recognize and feel increasingly comfortable in.
Water Comfort Builds a Foundation for Future SkillsBefore children can learn more advanced swimming skills, they first need to become comfortable in the water.
For a young child, even simple experiences can be meaningful. Learning how the water feels, practicing supported movement, becoming comfortable with appropriate submersion activities, and learning to respond to an instructor all help create a foundation for future learning.
Starting early gives children time to develop that comfort gradually and positively.
Water Safety Education Can Start EarlySwimming is fun, but water safety is one of the most important reasons to begin lessons early.
For babies and toddlers, swim lessons are one part of a larger approach to water safety. Young children still require constant, attentive adult supervision around any body of water, regardless of their swimming experience.
What lessons can do is begin introducing children and parents to safer habits around the water while developing foundational skills that can become stronger as a child grows.
The goal isn't to make a young child "waterproof." No child is. Instead, we want to build skills, awareness, confidence, and respect for the water over time.
Parents learn too!First Splash isn't only for our littlest swimmers—it's an opportunity for parents and caregivers to learn, too.
Parents play an important role in helping children develop a healthy relationship with the water. Participating together gives caregivers an opportunity to learn how to support and encourage their child in an aquatic environment while seeing firsthand what age-appropriate swim instruction looks like.
It also gives families a chance to ask questions, meet our instructors, explore Atlanta Swim Academy, and learn what the next steps in their child's swim journey could look like.
Why We Offer First Splash Every QuarterWe know there's never just one "right" time for a family to begin thinking about swim lessons.
Babies grow quickly. Families' schedules change. New families move into our community. And every few months, another group of little swimmers reaches the perfect age to begin exploring the water.
That's why First Splash is a quarterly event at Atlanta Swim Academy.
Rather than offering a one-time introduction, we want families to have regular opportunities throughout the year to experience the water with us. Each First Splash is a chance to introduce another group of babies, toddlers, parents, and caregivers to the importance of early water comfort and safety.
And because First Splash is FREE, families can experience our approach before deciding what comes next.
Confidence Starts with Positive ExperiencesA child's earliest experiences around water can influence how they feel about swimming later.
That's why we want those first experiences to feel safe, encouraging, playful, and positive.
Rather than rushing a child through skills, early swim experiences give little ones opportunities to explore the water at an age-appropriate pace. Every small accomplishment—from happily entering the pool to becoming more comfortable with water on their face—is progress worth celebrating.
Those little moments add up. Over time, they can help create a child who feels more comfortable, capable, and confident around the water.
